ImageStream Partners with PowerCode to Manage P2P Traffic

At ISPCON today, ImageStream^® announced it will partner with PowerCode™ to manage the "Per User Fair Queuing" (PUFQ) techniques ImageStream has developed to control peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic including encrypted Bit Torrents.

"Peer-to-peer traffic control has become a necessity for our service provider customers who need to share bandwidth fairly among their customers," said J.C. Utter, President of ImageStream. "Service providers demand it, and we will deliver an ideal solution in the next 90 days working with PowerCode."

"Our previous work on peer-to-peer traffic control relied on deep packet inspection," Utter said, "which is still used to prioritize voice and other unencrypted traffic. But with encrypted peer-to-peer, it's more difficult to classify. When the peer-to-peer software changes, new inspection methods must be developed, much like a virus definition file. This approach requires ongoing engineering and software updates that everyone would prefer to avoid."

ImageStream engineers have completed work on the queuing disciplines required to ensure reliable delivery of tiered services with fair sharing. The technique implements a "Per User Fair Queuing" methodology that would be difficult to manage without software like PowerCode.

With P2P traffic consuming some ISP networks, ImageStream and PowerCode anticipate strong demand for their combined solution. By some estimates, as much as 60% of all Internet traffic consists of P2P traffic, and the problem it creates will only grow as more legitimate software companies use P2P technology to distribute software updates to their customers.
