ImageStream Ships New POS OC3 Cards
At the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in San Francisco today, ImageStream announced that it is shipping its new OC3 Packet-over-SONET/SDH (POS) cards, the PCI 1104-O3 and the PMC 1104-O3. The new POS cards feature a Wintegra WinPath NPU, a 32-bit 33/66 MHz PCI or PMC bus interface, and four OC3/STM1 ports with pluggable SFP optical transceivers. The new 4-port cards are designed for use in ImageStream routers, and they can be used in OEM routing and monitoring applications for Linux.
The new POS OC3 cards take advantage of the WinPath 777 NPU, which includes an onboard MIPS processor for control, and a packet pipeline with four 200 MHz processing units. In addition to POS application support, the programmable NPU makes it easy to deliver future software releases that support advanced protocols and features. ImageStream currently plans to support ATM in future software releases, as well as applications for ATM including CES and IMA.
Another important feature of the new POS OC3 cards is modular transceivers. With pluggable SFP format optical transceivers, each port can be configured to provide different optical interfaces as needed. SFP transceiver options include multi-mode fiber for short-haul applications, intermediate reach single mode fiber for distances up to 15 km, and long reach single mode fiber for distances up to 25 km. Optical transceivers represent the largest incremental cost for adding more OC3 ports to the design, so the ability to remove transceivers from the cards makes it cost-effective to use the 4-port cards in 1, 2, and 4-port applications.
In recent years, POS circuits have been gaining popularity relative to ATM. This is because POS does not suffer from the "ATM tax" which consumes approximately 10% of the available capacity in an ATM circuit. The greater efficiency of POS has led to increasing demand for POS router ports, and POS interfaces for monitoring and test equipment. ImageStream developed the new POS solutions in response to customer requests for POS OC3 router and analyzer interfaces.
Company officials say that the first OEM customer for the cards will be using them in a military application for network monitoring. The new POS cards are also available with ImageStream routers including the Gateway Router, the Gateway 64, and the Enterprise Router.
