PCI 440 Series WAN Cards


ImageStream's PCI 440 series WAN cards are based on ImageStream's innovative, low-cost UniSpec WAN card technology. The 440 series consists of synchronous serial and T1/E1 WAN modules that interface with the host system using USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 serial interfaces. ImageStream loads the UniSpec USB WAN modules onto its UniSpec PCI carrier card to create single and dual port PCI cards.

The USB 441-SE is ImageStream's synchronous serial WAN module with one multipurpose V.35, RS232, or RS422 (EIA530, X.21 or RS449) port. This module is also available in a dual receiver configuration called the USB 441-SEM for monitoring applications that work with ImageStream's passive taps. The USB 441-TE is ImageStream's UniSpec WAN module with one T1/E1 port. The small form factor of these USB WAN modules makes them ideal for routers like the Envoy and Envoy 1U that offer low-cost routing with no PCI expansion slots.

For PCI applications, ImageStream loads one or two USB 441-SE WAN modules onto its universal PCI carrier card to create the single port PCI 441-SE and the dual port PCI 442-SE WAN cards. The same approach is used with the USB 441-TE module to create the PCI 441-TE and PCI 442-TE, ImageStream's single and dual port PCI T1/E1 cards, and the USB 441-SEM module to create the PCI 441-SEM and PCI 442-SEM monitoring cards.

ImageStream's universal PCI carrier card provides a PCI 2.2 compliant 32-bit, 33 MHz PCI bus interface that supports 3.3 or 5 V signaling. The PCI carrier card includes dual USB 2.0 high-speed interfaces that support one or two UniSpec WAN modules. UniSpec WAN modules may also be loaded onto future carrier cards for PCI Express, and other buses that ImageStream may support over time.

Technical Description
440 series WAN modules share common elements including critical dimensions, certain electronic components, and carrier cards. The PCI carrier card uses the NEC D720101 chipset to provide a PCI 2.2 compliant host bus interface and USB support for EHCI and OHCI modes. The PCI carrier card also includes the Linear Technology LT1086 linear regulator that provides regulated 3.3 VDC power to the connected WAN modules for systems that do not have a 3.3 VDC power provided on the PCI bus.

440 series WAN modules use the Cypress Semiconductor CY7C68013 chipset to provide the back-end USB peripheral interface to the host system or carrier card. The Cypress USB controller connects to ImageStream's Flexible Protocol Engine (FPE), a custom ASIC that can process any protocol required at hardware speeds. Protocol support can be changed in the field within seconds for maximum flexibility. The default FPE configuration supports HDLC framing.

ImageStream's USB 440-SE synchronous serial WAN interface module relies on the Sipex 3508 serial front end to support all major synchronous serial standards. With proper termination, the USB 440-SE module supports maximum transfer rates of more than 10 Mbps full duplex. The 3508 connects to the FPE on the back end, and it connects to the HD26 external connector which supports different serial standards with the appropriate cables. The USB 440-SE connects to the host or carrier card via pin headers that provide data I/O and power input.

ImageStream's USB 440-TE WAN interface provides a standard 8-pin modular RJ48 connector for external connection to the T1 or E1 circuit. The RJ48 connector connects to the Halo MST1 integrated LIU, which also provides surge protection for the card. The LIU connects to the PMC-Sierra PM4351, which provides framing and CSU capabilities. The 4351 connects to the FPE, and then on to the common back end. The card supports T1 or E1, in full channel or fractional modes. Supported T1 standards include long haul (T1.403) or DSX cross connects, as well as all standard T1 framing modes and line codes. E1 mode supports 120 ohm twisted pair or 75 ohm termination, and CRC4 or CAS framing. The card can also operate in unstructured E1 mode providing the entire 2.048 Mbps bandwidth. The USB 440-TE connects to the host or carrier card via pin headers that provide data I/O and power input to the card.
